Personal Year 1: The Year You Start a New Nine-Year Cycle

••7 Min Read

A 1 Personal Year is the first year of a new nine-year cycle, and it asks you to start something and drive it yourself. You feel a strong push toward new goals, more energy than you had a year earlier, and a wish to make the changes you have been putting off. What you set in motion now shapes the years that follow, so the year rewards clear plans and quick decisions, and drifting costs more than usual.

The first two or three months are usually the hardest. The previous year, a 9, is still fading, and it takes a while to get the ball rolling.

The reading below follows the Pythagorean system and the way we use it in yearly chart work with clients at Kundra Astro. A Personal Year shows the theme of a year. It does not replace effort or a full chart reading.

Quick answer

  • Where it sits: the first year of the cycle, after a 9 and before a 2.
  • The theme: new projects, self-reliance, decisions and a strong forward push.
  • The hard part: some emotional turmoil in the first two or three months, and a crossroads that needs courage and a clear head.
  • The key months: March, April, July, August and October.
  • How often: once every nine years.
If you are not sure you are in a 1 year, the Personal Year Number Calculator will tell you from your date of birth.

How to Know You Are in a 1 Year

Add your birth month, your birth day and the Universal Year, which is the four digits of the calendar year added down to one digit. Reduce each one first, then add them. You are in a 1 year when the total is 10 or 19. The full method, and what the other eight years look like, is on our page about the Personal Year number and the nine-year cycle.

Here are four birth dates and the calendar year in which each one has a 1 Personal Year:

Birth dateMonthDayA 1 year falls inUniversal YearTotal

29 November2 (from 11)2 (from 29)2031610
4 May542035110
8 August882037319

Each of these people gets another 1 year nine years later, and nine years after that.

January Is Not a Clean Break

The year runs from January to December, but its influence does not switch on and off like a light. There is a cusp of about three months at each end. In the first three months the previous year is still fading while the new one gathers strength. The influence peaks around September, and after that the number for the following year starts to be felt.

For a 1 year this matters more than for most. You are starting a cycle, yet you spend the opening months finishing what the 9 left behind. January is a good time to plan and to clear what is left over. It is a poor time to judge how the year is going.

Some numerologists start the Personal Year on the birthday. We count by calendar year, because the Personal Year rests on the Universal Year and moves in step with it.

What the 1 Year Asks of You

  • Start things. You are inspired to begin new projects or enterprises. Everything you do in the year affects your future, so do not hold back.
  • Rely on yourself. Share your plans and gather the support you need, but you are the driving force. Be decisive.
  • Make the changes you have delayed. A diet, an exercise routine or a new course of study all fit a 1 year.
  • Expect more confidence than before. The 9 was a time of letting go. The 1 is a time of birth, and determination rises with it.
  • Stay organised. There is a lot of work, and distraction and procrastination cost more than usual.
  • Be ready for turmoil early. The first two or three months can be unsettled before the plans take hold.
The reading calls it a crossroads. You need courage and a clear head to stay on the right track, and the year is also full of opportunity. Both are true together. Opportunity is not the same as ease.

The Months That Matter

MonthWhat tends to happen
MarchYou can lay the foundation for your plans.
AprilChanges take place, such as a change of residence or career.
July and AugustThe fruits of your work begin to show.
OctoberA major turn in events, often with emotional turmoil. The autumn pulls your plans into a more concrete form.

In our reading, the order is the point. What you build in March decides how much there is to see in July and August, so waiting for a perfect moment to begin costs you the middle of the year.

Where the 1 Sits in the Cycle

A 1 always follows a 9. The 9 is the year for finishing unfinished business, clearing out and letting go, and the 1 is where the space you made gets used. The Personal Year 9 meaning page covers what to clear before a 1 begins.

The year after the 1 is a 2, and it asks for something different. The 2 is about protecting and nurturing what you started, with tact and patience, and you may wonder what happened to the drive you had. That is normal. The Personal Year 2 meaning page explains that slower year.

The 1 also marks turning points in a longer stretch of life. A Pinnacle change always takes place in a 9 or a 1 year. Take someone born on 12 February 1988, who is a Life Path 4:

  • First Pinnacle ends: at age 32, which is 36 minus 4. That falls in 2020, a 9 year.
  • The year after: 2021 is a 1 year (2 + 3 + 5 = 10, which reduces to 1).
For that person the 1 opens a new nine-year cycle and a new Pinnacle together. In our reading, such a year carries extra weight.

Work, Love and Money in a 1 Year

The Pythagorean reading of the 1 year does not give separate verdicts for love or money, so we read them from its main themes. These are tendencies, not fixed results.

  • Work: this is the year to start a venture, change direction or study something new. April is when changes of career and residence tend to land. Pick one or two plans and push them, rather than starting five.
  • Love: self-reliance is the theme, so a partner can feel shut out if you disappear into your plans. Telling the people close to you what you are building is part of the advice, not a side issue.
  • Money: results show from July and August, so a tight first half does not mean the year is going badly. Put money into what builds the plan.

Three Things a 1 Year Is Not

  • It is not a Life Path 1. Your Life Path is fixed at birth and the Personal Year changes every January. The two meet only in the year you were born, because your first Personal Year equals your Life Path. So someone with a Life Path 1 was born in a 1 year and has one every nine years after that. A 1 year does not make you a Life Path 1.
  • It is not the Universal Year 1. The Universal Year is shared by everyone. Your Personal Year depends on your birth month and day, so two people can live in the same calendar year with different numbers.
  • It is not an easy year by default. The energy is high and the opportunities are real, but the turmoil of the first months and the crossroads in the middle are part of the same year.

Common Questions About a 1 Personal Year

Is a 1 Personal Year good for starting a business?

It points that way. The year brings an urge to begin new projects and enterprises. Lay the foundation in March and give the plan until July and August to show results. Do not judge it by the first three months.

How often does a 1 Personal Year come?

Every nine years. After a 9 the cycle starts again at 1.

Does the 1 year start in January or on my birthday?

In January, with a cusp of about three months at each end. The previous year is still fading in the opening months.

What should I avoid in a 1 year?

Distraction and procrastination. This is a year of work, and holding back the push to create works against it.

When One Number Is Not Enough

A Personal Year is one part of the chart. If you want it read together with your Life Path, your name numbers and the other cycles around it, our numerology report puts them in one place.
