The short answer

What is Vedic numerology?

Vedic numerology, or Ank Jyotish (the science of numbers), reads numbers through the nine planets of Indian astrology. Your Mulank, the birth number, comes from the day you were born. Your Bhagyank, the destiny number, comes from your full date of birth. Each number from 1 to 9 has a ruling planet that shapes its traits, showing tendencies rather than fixed outcomes.

The Navagraha

Numbers 1 to 9
and Their Planets

In Ank Jyotish every number belongs to one graha (planet), and the planet's nature is the reading. A Mulank 1 behaves like the Sun; a Mulank 8 behaves like Saturn.

  • Sun · Surya · Born on 1, 10, 19, 28

    The Leader

Self, authority and visibility. A natural instinct to lead rather than follow.

  • Moon · Chandra · Born on 2, 11, 20, 29

    The Diplomat

Mind, mood and receptivity. Quick to sense how others feel before a word is said.

  • Jupiter · Guru · Born on 3, 12, 21, 30

    The Teacher

Wisdom, growth and teaching. Drawn to knowledge and to passing it on.

  • Rahu · Rahu · Born on 4, 13, 22, 31

    The Unconventional Builder

Ambition and unusual routes. A path that rarely follows the standard order.

  • Mercury · Budh · Born on 5, 14, 23

    The Communicator

Intellect, speech and trade. Quick, adaptable and rarely still for long.

  • Venus · Shukra · Born on 6, 15, 24

    The Nurturer

Beauty, comfort and love. Drawn to harmony in every form.

  • Ketu · Ketu · Born on 7, 16, 25

    The Seeker

Detachment, insight and inner search. The most inward-looking of the nine.

  • Saturn · Shani · Born on 8, 17, 26

    The Karma Yogi

Discipline, delay and earned reward. A slow start and a lasting finish.

  • Mars · Mangal · Born on 9, 18, 27

    The Warrior

Courage, energy and drive. More raw drive than any other number.

Master Number 11: two traditions

Born on the 11th, or a full date of birth that adds up to 11? You hold the one number Vedic numerologists read in two ways. We write for both, so you can see your number from each side.

The classical reading

The planets run from 1 to 9, so 11 becomes 1 + 1 = 2 and is read through the Moon (Chandra): sensitive, intuitive and cooperative. This is the number our calculators give.

The master-number reading

Many traditions keep 11 whole. It joins the 1's urge to lead with the 2's intuition at a higher pitch: vision and inspiration, with an intensity that takes time to settle.

Your three numbers

Mulank, Bhagyank
and Namank

A basic Vedic reading uses three numbers. Two come from your date of birth and one from your name.

No single number tells the whole story. A good reading looks at how the three sit together.

  1. Mulank (Birth number)

The day of the month you were born

Your everyday nature: how you think, react and carry yourself.

  2. Bhagyank (Destiny number)

Every digit of your full date of birth

The direction of your life and what it keeps asking you to build.

  3. Namank (Name number)

The letters of your name, in Chaldean values

How the world sees you. The only one of the three you can change.

Name numbers

Chaldean vs
Pythagorean

Your Namank uses Chaldean letter values. They follow the sound of each letter, run from 1 to 8, and never use 9, which is kept as a sacred number.

The Pythagorean values used in Western numerology simply count through the alphabet from 1 to 9. The same name can give different numbers in each, so stay with one system.

The 3 by 3 square

The Lo Shu
Grid

The Lo Shu grid is a square of the numbers 1 to 9 in which every row, column and diagonal adds up to 15. Each digit of your date of birth is placed in its own box.

Numbers that repeat show natural strengths. Empty boxes show qualities you build on purpose rather than inherit.

  • Placed: the non-zero digits 2, 3, 8, 1, 9 and 9.
  • Repeated: 9 appears twice, so its qualities are read as stronger.
  • Missing: 4, 5, 6, 7. These are the areas a reading looks at for conscious effort.

Practical steps

Name Correction
and Remedies

Name correction means adjusting the spelling of the name you use, often by a single letter, so your Namank sits better with your Mulank and Bhagyank.

Remedies are kept simple: honouring the ruling planet on its day, wearing its colour, a mantra or a donation.

What we suggest

  • Start with free remedies tied to your planet's day and colour.
  • Change a name only when it clearly clashes, and only to a spelling you will actually use.
  • Wear a gemstone only on qualified advice, after a full chart reading.

What we avoid

  • Promising that a new spelling will change your luck overnight.
  • Fear about “unlucky” numbers. No number is luckier than another.
  • Remedies that cost money you would rather not spend.

Our method

How We
Calculate

Our calculators and guides use one method, so you can check any number by hand.

  1. Mulank: add the digits of your birth day until one digit is left.
  2. Bhagyank: add every digit of your full date of birth, then reduce to one digit.
  3. Namank:add the Chaldean values of your name's letters, then reduce.

Worked example

23-08-1990

Add
2 + 3 + 0 + 8 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0
32
Reduce
3 + 2
5

Result

Bhagyank 5, ruled by Mercury

Where 11 fits. Our calculators follow the classical planetary reading, where every total reduces to 1 to 9. Born on the 29th: 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2, a Mulank of 2 ruled by the Moon. Where a tradition keeps 11 as a master number, we say so and read it in its own guides.

Planet rulerships on this page match every Mulank and Bhagyank guide on the site. Raghav Kundra writes and maintains this page.

Two traditions

Vedic
and Western

Western numerology starts from the same birth date but reduces the month, day and year separately and keeps 11 and 22 as master numbers. So the two systems can give different numbers for one person.

Both are worth knowing. Our Western guide covers the Life Path, name numbers and Personal Years.

Common questions

Vedic Numerology FAQs

Short, plain answers to what readers ask us most.

What is the difference between Mulank and Bhagyank?

Mulank, the birth number, comes from the day of the month you were born and describes your everyday nature. Bhagyank, the destiny number, comes from your full date of birth and describes the direction of your life. Most people have two different numbers, and a reading looks at both together.

How do I calculate my Mulank?

Add the digits of the day you were born until one digit is left. Born on the 5th, your Mulank is 5. Born on the 18th, it is 1 + 8 = 9. Born on the 29th, it is 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2. The month and year are not used.

Which planet rules my number?

1 is ruled by the Sun, 2 by the Moon, 3 by Jupiter, 4 by Rahu, 5 by Mercury, 6 by Venus, 7 by Ketu, 8 by Saturn and 9 by Mars. The same rule applies to Mulank and Bhagyank.

Is 11 a master number in Vedic numerology?

It depends on the tradition. In the classical planetary reading, the planets run from 1 to 9, so 11 is reduced to 2 and read through the Moon. Many numerologists follow the master-number tradition instead and keep 11 whole, as a number of heightened intuition and vision. We cover both: our calculators give the classical number, and our Mulank 11 and Bhagyank 11 guides read 11 as a master number.

What is Namank?

Namank is your name number. Each letter of your name gets a Chaldean value from 1 to 8, the values are added, and the total is reduced to one digit. It reflects how the world sees you, and it is the only one of your three numbers you can change.

What is the Lo Shu grid?

A 3 by 3 square of the numbers 1 to 9 in which every row, column and diagonal adds up to 15. The digits of your date of birth are placed in their boxes. Repeated numbers show natural strengths; missing numbers show qualities to build.

Can changing my name's spelling change my luck?

It can bring your Namank into better balance with your Mulank and Bhagyank, which many people find helpful. It is not a guarantee. We suggest it only when the current name clearly clashes, and only as a small change you are happy to use every day.

Is Vedic numerology the same as a Kundali?

No. Numerology works from a few numbers; a Kundali maps all nine planets across twelve houses with timing. Numerology is a quick, useful view of temperament, and it is at its best read alongside a full birth chart.
