Your Numbers, Explained
Find your Life Path and the four other core numbers, see exactly how each one is worked out, and learn what they say about how you think, love and work.
The short answer
What is numerology?
Numerology is the study of what numbers mean in your life. In the Western, or Pythagorean, system your date of birth and your full birth name are turned into a few key numbers. The most important is the Life Path, which outlines the opportunities, challenges and lessons you are likely to meet. Read them as tendencies to reflect on, not fixed predictions.

The five core numbers
A chart holds many numbers, but five carry most of the weight: two from your birthday and three from your name. Here is one chart, taken apart.
From the birth date
03·14·1987
3 + 5 + 7 = 15 → 6
From the birth name
Vowels above, consonants below. A=1 … I=9, then J starts again at 1.

- 01Life PathYour full date of birth
- The main plot of your life. It outlines the opportunities, challenges and lessons you are likely to meet, and every other number is read in its light.
- 02Birth DayThe day you were born
- A specific talent you carry. The lightest of the five but the most precise: a 15 and a 24 both reduce to 6, yet bring different gifts, so the full day is read too.
- 03ExpressionEvery letter of your birth name
- Your talents, abilities and shortcomings, and the person you are aiming to become.
- 04Heart's DesireThe vowels (also: Soul Urge)
- What you want most deep down: the motivation behind many of your choices in work, friendship and lifestyle.
- 05PersonalityThe consonants
- The side of you people meet first, like a narrow entrance hall to a much larger room.
Ten people who share a Life Path can seem to have nothing in common. Ten people who share a Birth Day often carry themselves in a recognizably similar way.
11 and 22
Master numbers
Two numbers are never reduced in your core numbers. They hold more potential than the single digits, and more pressure to go with it. Most people grow into them with time.
11: The Intuitive
The most intuitive of all numbers. Insight and inspiration, with nerves and self-doubt to manage.
22: The Master Builder
The most powerful number. A large vision turned into something real, with control and pressure as the tests.
11/2 and 22/4
Charts sometimes write them this way to show the digit they rest on. The master number is the one we read.
What about 33?
Some numerologists count it. The Pythagorean method we follow keeps only 11 and 22, so 33 reduces to 6.
Not Karmic Debt
13, 14, 16 and 19 point to an extra lesson when they appear inside a reduction. They are a separate idea.
Timing
Personal Year
your nine-year cycle
Your Personal Year changes every year. Add your birth month, your birth day and the current year, each reduced, then reduce the total. Master numbers are reduced here, so 11 counts as 2 and 22 as 4.
The years run from 1 to 9 and then begin again. The year you were born always matches your Life Path.
- Personal Year 1: New Beginnings
- Personal Year 2: Relationships and Cooperation
- Personal Year 3: Creativity and Expression
- Personal Year 4: Hard Work and Foundations
- Personal Year 5: Change and Freedom
- Personal Year 6: Responsibility and Home
- Personal Year 7: Reflection
- Personal Year 8: Reward and Recognition
- Personal Year 9: Completion
Love and partnership
Numerology
compatibility
Compatibility starts with the two Life Paths. Some pairs fit easily, some need care, and most sit in between.
We read each side on its own, because how a 3 experiences a 7 is not always how a 7 experiences a 3. A harder match shows where to be patient with each other.

Our method
How We
Calculate
Every number on this page and in our calculators is worked out the same way, so you can check any result by hand.
- Write your date of birth as month, day and year.
- Reduce each part to a single digit on its own. Stop at 11 or 22.
- Add the three results and reduce again, keeping 11 and 22.
Worked example
August 23, 1990
- Month
- August
- 8
- Day
- 23 → 2 + 3 = 5
- 5
- Year
- 1990 → 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19 → 1 + 9 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1
- 1
- Add
- 8 + 5 + 1 = 14 → 1 + 4 = 5
- 5
Result
Life Path 5, The Free Spirit
Why each part first? It is the only way to catch master numbers. For May 29, 1948, reducing each part gives 5 + 11 + 22 = 38, then 11. Adding the whole numbers first gives 1982, then 20, then 2, and the master number is lost.
Our meanings follow the Pythagorean system, and the arithmetic in our calculators is checked by automated tests. Raghav Kundra writes and maintains this page.
Two traditions
Western and Vedic
This page follows the Western system. The Vedic tradition starts from the same birth date but adds it differently, links each number to a planet and values letters by sound. Neither cancels the other.
| Topic | Western · this page | Vedic |
|---|---|---|
| Birth date | Month, day and year reduced separately | Every digit of the date added together |
| Big numbers | Keeps master numbers 11 and 22 | Each number 1 to 9 tied to a ruling planet |
| Letters | Valued 1 to 9 in alphabet order | Valued 1 to 8 by sound |

Common questions
Numerology FAQs
Short, plain answers to what readers ask us most.
How do I find my numerology number?
Most people mean the Life Path number. Reduce your birth month, day and year to single digits one at a time, keeping 11 and 22, then add the three and reduce again. For August 23, 1990: 8 + 5 + 1 = 14, and 1 + 4 = 5. Our free Life Path calculator shows every step.
What are the five core numbers?
Life Path and Birth Day come from your date of birth. Expression, Heart's Desire (also called Soul Urge) and Personality come from your full birth name: all the letters, the vowels and the consonants.
What are master numbers?
11 and 22. They are never reduced in your core numbers because they carry more potential than the single digits, along with more pressure. 11 is the most intuitive number; 22, the Master Builder, is the most powerful.
Is 33 a master number?
Some numerologists count it. The Pythagorean method we follow keeps only 11 and 22, so a total of 33 is reduced: 3 + 3 = 6.
Can my numbers change?
Your Life Path and Birth Day never change, because your date of birth never changes. Your core name numbers use your name at birth. A name you use later, such as a married name, adds detail through the minor name numbers but does not replace them.
Which name should I use?
Your full name at birth, as written on your birth certificate. If a spelling error was accepted by your family and used, keep it. If you were adopted, use the original name given before the adoption, when you know it.
What is a Personal Year number?
The theme of your current year. Add your birth month, birth day and the current year, each reduced, then reduce the total. Years run from 1 to 9 and start again, and master numbers are reduced here.
Is numerology scientific?
No. Numerology is a symbolic system, not a science, and it cannot predict events. We use it as a way to reflect on patterns and tendencies, and we suggest you read it the same way.
How is Western numerology different from the Vedic system?
Both start from your date of birth and name, but they add the numbers differently, value letters differently and read meaning differently. This page covers the Western method; our Vedic guide covers the other.
