Ank Jyotish guide
Mulank comes from the Sanskrit mool, meaning root. It is the root number of your personality, taken from the day of the month you were born and reduced to a single digit between 1 and 9. You will also see it called moolank, birth number, radical number or psychic number — all the same calculation.
What makes Mulank distinctly Vedic rather than Western is the graha behind each number. Ank Jyotish assigns every digit to one of the nine planets, and the reading is really a reading of that planet: Mulank 1 behaves like the Sun, Mulank 8 behaves like Saturn. If you already know your birth chart, you will notice the descriptions echo how those grahas behave there too.
Mulank is read as your instinctive self — the part of you that shows up under pressure, before you have had time to think. It pairs with Bhagyank, your destiny number, which describes where life is taking you rather than who you already are. Numerologists read the two together, because a person whose nature and direction agree tends to have an easier time than one whose numbers pull apart.

Mulank is simple enough to do on paper, which is worth knowing so you can check any calculator against your own arithmetic.
Mulank uses only the date, not the month or year. Someone born on 24 March 1994 and someone born on 24 November 2001 share the same Mulank.
A birth date of 24 becomes 2 + 4 = 6. A date already between 1 and 9 stays as it is, so someone born on the 7th has Mulank 7 directly.
If the sum is still two digits, add again. Born on the 29th: 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2. Your Mulank is 2.
Each number from 1 to 9 is governed by one of the nine grahas — Sun, Moon, Jupiter, Rahu, Mercury, Venus, Ketu, Saturn and Mars — and the planet's nature is what the reading is built on.
Worked example
Born on 29 August 1994. Take the day only: 29. Add the digits: 2 + 9 = 11. Still two digits, so add again: 1 + 1 = 2. Mulank is 2, ruled by Chandra, the Moon. Note that the same person's Bhagyank would be different, because that calculation uses August and 1994 as well.

Mulank 1 is governed by Surya, the Sun — the graha of self, authority and visibility. Born on the 1st, 10th, 19th or 28th, you carry a natural instinct to lead rather than follow.
Career: You do best where the outcome carries your name — founding a business, heading a department, consulting, politics, administration, surgery, or any creative field where authorship matters. Salaried roles work only when you are given genuine autonomy. Partnerships need a clear division of authority or friction arrives quickly.
Relationships: You are loyal and protective, and you show love through action rather than words. The recurring difficulty is treating a relationship the way you treat a project — steering it. Partners who have their own centre of gravity last with you; those who defer completely end up resenting it. Mulank 2, 4 and 7 tend to complement you well.

Mulank 2 belongs to Chandra, the Moon — the graha of mind, mood and receptivity. Born on the 2nd, 11th, 20th or 29th, you sense the emotional temperature of a room before anyone says a word.
Career: Counselling, teaching, human resources, hospitality, nursing, design, music and diplomacy all suit you. You perform noticeably better in partnership than in isolation, and better in a stable organisation than in a volatile start-up. Roles requiring aggressive negotiation drain you quickly.
Relationships: You are among the most devoted partners in numerology and you need emotional reassurance rather than grand gestures. The risk is losing your outline inside someone else's life. A partner who asks what you actually want, and waits for the honest answer, brings out your best. Mulank 1, 6 and 7 are traditionally harmonious.

Mulank 3 is ruled by Guru, Jupiter — the graha of wisdom, expansion and instruction. Born on the 3rd, 12th, 21st or 30th, you gravitate towards knowledge and towards passing it on.
Career: Teaching, law, publishing, advisory and finance, content and media, spiritual instruction, and any expert role where credibility compounds over time. You are respected more as you age, so careers with a long arc suit you better than ones that peak early.
Relationships: You are warm, forgiving and enjoyable company, and you need a partner who is intellectually alive. Boredom is a bigger threat to your relationships than conflict. You give advice readily and must learn that your partner sometimes wants a listener, not a guide. Mulank 6, 9 and 1 pair well.

Mulank 4 is governed by Rahu, the north lunar node — the shadow graha of ambition, disruption and unorthodox routes. Born on the 4th, 13th, 22nd or 31st, your path rarely follows the standard sequence.
Career: Technology, research, engineering, aviation, data, foreign trade, crypto and emerging fields, investigation, and anything that rewards seeing round corners. Rigid hierarchies frustrate you. You often succeed abroad or in an industry that did not exist when you were born.
Relationships: You are intensely loyal once trust is earned, but earning it takes time and your guard is high. You need a partner who does not require constant emotional performance and who is unbothered by your unusual choices. Mulank 5, 7 and 8 tend to understand you fastest.

Mulank 5 belongs to Budh, Mercury — the graha of intellect, speech and commerce. Born on the 5th, 14th or 23rd, you are quick, adaptable and rarely still for long.
Career: Sales, marketing, trading, media, writing, consulting, entrepreneurship, travel and anything commission-linked where your speed is rewarded. You thrive with several projects running and stall in slow, repetitive roles. You often earn from more than one source.
Relationships: You are charming, playful and mentally stimulating, and you need a partner who is a genuine friend as well as a spouse. Routine kills your interest faster than conflict does. Give a relationship novelty and honesty and you stay for life; give it monotony and you drift. Mulank 1, 4 and 6 work well.

Mulank 6 is ruled by Shukra, Venus — the graha of beauty, comfort, love and refinement. Born on the 6th, 15th or 24th, you are drawn to harmony in every form, from relationships to interiors.
Career: Design, fashion, interiors, hospitality, food, the arts, beauty, luxury goods, healthcare, counselling and education. You do well in anything where taste is the product. Financially you attract comfort but must watch outflow as closely as income.
Relationships: Among the most naturally romantic numbers. You are devoted, attentive and happiest in partnership — so much so that being single unsettles you more than it should. Guard against giving so completely that the relationship becomes unequal. Mulank 2, 3 and 9 are traditionally harmonious.

Mulank 7 belongs to Ketu, the south lunar node — the shadow graha of detachment, insight and moksha. Born on the 7th, 16th or 25th, you are the introspective outlier of the nine numbers.
Career: Research, medicine and diagnostics, psychology, data science, forensics, spiritual practice and teaching, writing, music, and any specialist niche you can go deep into. You perform poorly in noisy, target-driven sales floors and exceptionally well when left alone with a hard problem.
Relationships: You love quietly and choose few people. Because you rarely announce your feelings, partners can misread distance as disinterest. A partner who respects your need for solitude without taking it personally is essential rather than optional. Mulank 1, 2 and 4 tend to understand you.

Mulank 8 is governed by Shani, Saturn — the graha of discipline, delay and earned reward. Born on the 8th, 17th or 26th, you are given the slowest start and often the most durable finish.
Career: Law, administration, real estate and construction, mining and heavy industry, finance and audit, logistics, government service, and any structural role where accountability sits with you. Your career typically consolidates after the early thirties rather than before.
Relationships: You are steady, committed and unromantic in expression but dependable in substance. You show love by being there, not by saying so. Partners need patience early on, because you open slowly. Once committed you rarely leave. Mulank 4, 5 and 6 tend to work well.

Mulank 9 is ruled by Mangal, Mars — the graha of courage, energy and conflict. Born on the 9th, 18th or 27th, you carry more raw drive than any other number.
Career: Defence and police, sports, surgery, engineering, real estate, manufacturing, emergency services, entrepreneurship and any competitive field. You need a physical or adversarial outlet; without one, the same energy turns into irritability.
Relationships: You are passionate, loyal and fiercely protective. Arguments with you are loud and short rather than cold and long. You need a partner who does not retreat at the first raised voice and who can meet your intensity without matching it. Mulank 3, 6 and 9 are traditionally compatible.

Mulank, also written moolank and sometimes called the birth number, radical number or psychic number, is a single digit from 1 to 9 derived from the day of the month you were born. In Ank Jyotish — Vedic numerology — it is read as your inner nature: how you think, decide and instinctively react.
Add the digits of your birth date together until one digit remains. Born on the 5th, your Mulank is 5. Born on the 18th, it is 1 + 8 = 9. Born on the 29th, it is 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2. The month and year are not used.
Mulank comes from the day of the month alone and describes who you are inside. Bhagyank comes from your full date of birth — day, month and year — and describes the direction your life is meant to take. Mulank is your nature; Bhagyank is your destiny. Most readings use both together.
Mulank 1 is ruled by the Sun, 2 by the Moon, 3 by Jupiter, 4 by Rahu, 5 by Mercury, 6 by Venus, 7 by Ketu, 8 by Saturn and 9 by Mars. That planet's qualities shape the entire reading, which is why the same number is described so consistently across different sources.
No number is luckier than another. Each is ruled by a different graha with its own strengths and its own tests — Mulank 1 gets authority but struggles with ego, Mulank 8 gets endurance but faces delay. What matters is whether your Mulank sits harmoniously with your Bhagyank and with the planets in your birth chart.
No. Your date of birth is fixed, so your Mulank is fixed for life. What can change is your Namank, the number derived from the spelling of your name, which is why some people adjust a spelling on a numerologist's advice.
No. Mulank needs only the date of the month, which makes it one of the few Vedic calculations that works without an exact birth time. For anything involving the Moon or the ascendant — your Nakshatra, Rashi or full Kundali — birth time becomes essential.
Each Mulank has dates, days, colours and companion numbers traditionally considered supportive, drawn from its ruling planet. Mulank 1, ruled by the Sun, favours Sundays and gold; Mulank 8, ruled by Saturn, favours Saturdays and deep blue. Your result lists them for your number.
This is a common belief, not a rule. Mulank 4 is ruled by Rahu and Mulank 8 by Saturn — both slower, more testing grahas that ask for effort before reward. Traditional texts describe them as demanding rather than unfortunate, and both are strongly associated with long-term success that arrives later than for other numbers.
No. Numerology is a compact system built on one number; a Kundali maps nine planets across twelve houses with dasha timing. Mulank is a useful, quick indicator of temperament, and it is at its most accurate when read alongside a full birth chart rather than instead of one.
