It is a map of where the nine grahas — the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu — stood in the sidereal zodiac at the exact moment and place of your birth, arranged into twelve houses starting from your ascendant.

Three things: your date of birth, your time of birth as accurately as you can get it, and your place of birth. The date positions the slower planets, the time fixes your Lagna and the Moon's degree, and the place supplies the coordinates and historical time zone.

Not reliably. The Lagna changes roughly every two hours, so an unknown birth time means the house structure of the entire chart is uncertain, and the Moon's position — which sets your Nakshatra and your whole Dasha timeline — can be wrong too. If your time is uncertain, use the closest recorded estimate and treat house-based interpretation with caution.

The Lagna chart, or D1, is your main birth chart and shows the overall structure of your life. The Navamsa, or D9, divides each sign into nine parts of 3°20′ and is read chiefly for marriage, the spouse and a planet's underlying strength. A planet occupying the same sign in both charts is called vargottama and is considered especially stable.

Vimshottari Dasha is the main Vedic system for timing events. It divides life into a 120-year cycle of planetary periods called Mahadashas, each subdivided into Antardashas. Your starting Dasha lord is set by the Nakshatra your Moon occupied at birth, which is why an accurate birth time matters for the timeline.

The charts are drawn in the North Indian diamond style, where the houses stay fixed and the sign numbers move. This is the format used across most of northern India and by the majority of Hindi and English Kundali software.

The Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard adopted by India's Calendar Reform Committee and the most widely used sidereal reference in Vedic astrology. Charts built on a different ayanamsa, such as Raman or KP, may differ slightly for planets sitting near a sign boundary.
